π

Pi : C/d, 22/7, irrational, transcendental, infinite. Today is Pi Day, because 3.14, founded in 1988 in San Francisco. It is Einstein’s birthday. It is also my birthday. Happy Pi/Bi, as my friend put it. This being Pi Day makes my birthday worthwhile. I say that because until I found out that it was also Pi Day, I rather disliked my birthday. I know that sounds weird, but I’m an introvert and I find too much attention on me overwhelming. So now when the attention gets overwhelming, I quickly switch the focus to Pi Day, which starts another conversation and I’m happy. And it’s such a magical thing, Pi. That sort of math is uncanny, right? A reality in which a simple circle can possess such wild quantitative – or not-so-quantitative – qualities is a very strange reality. Worth a meditation.

I saw this Aronofsky film when it first came out. I don’t remember too much about it except the feeling that I kind of wanted more from it. So I’d like to see it again, just to know if I missed something or if my initial critique was right. It’s a beautiful film, surely, and dramatic and well-acted and exciting, but I was looking for a transcendence that. . . approached but never materialised. The ending was a big ole cop-out, in plain language.

I don’t need to explain the Joni. I’m sorry her Ladies of the Canyon album isn’t on Spotify. It’s a great one for even moderate Joni fans – “Big Yellow Taxi”, “Woodstock”, and this one were the hits – so I chose to post this version on Soundcloud for everyone. This is the song link on Apple Music if that’s your subscription.

It’s been a nice day. I touched some of the people I love most in this world and they made me feel realreal good. A big thanks to the infinite strange mixed into the universe.
