When I was a kid, the evangelical Christians would burn disco records. “Disco Sucks” was a big meme then. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out all the reasons why. Just a passing reflection on that specific brand of hate will give you a short list. We got the last laugh. Everything is disco now.

You can hear the resemblance between the syncopations here with “Angel Eyes” from the previous post. Disco migrated and, oddly enough, mated with Punk to form New Wave, a sort-of pop-ish hybrid that wasn’t popular until it was. And then it really was. I remember being particularly disgusted with “Stop Making Sense” by the Talking Heads. All the frat boys would hit the disco booth, drunk, demanding “Burning Down the House”. I mean, I love the Talking Heads, but not so much drunk frat boys. But by that time, we were moving on to House anyway.

Heaven 17 were one of those pop-synth New Wave bands that got played in both Hi-NRG discotheques throwing an edge and punk clubs tossing a softie. This song was particularly easy, so when in came up on my bike today, I responded. I never knew the words up until now, though. They’ve got something to think about there, what a surprise.

The video was an algorithm selection probably based on my friends’ tastes. I like it though. It’s happy and poppy, sing-songy. Fits here, somehow.

I’m not going to fake this anymore. I’m still in a foul mood. Let me get out of here before I say something bad.
